Out Dancer Spices Up Rugby Game With ‘Single Ladies’ Performance

Category is…Rugby Player Realness!

Rugby is pretty gay. The huddles, the short shorts, the burly men in locker rooms. The only thing it needs to push the sport over the edge is a choreographed number. Lucky for us, and rugby, out dancer Wiaan Laing is here to save the gay.

Single Ladies Still Hits

It’s hard to believe that Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It) by Beyoncé will be turning 14 this year. It’s even harder to quantify the cultural impact of this video and its iconic choreography. Somehow we still never tire of seeing it being performed. It’s a good thing too because this was the song of choice for dancer and teacher Wiaan Laing. During a recent game for the South African rugby team DHL Stormers, the dancer put on the team kit and stunned everyone with incredible choreography.

Liang really looked the part in the team colors and short shorts. He truly has the talent, energy, and body to impress a crowd. Liang’s performance, accompanied by a team of equally skilled cheerleaders, has racked up over 6.4 million views and 564,000 likes on TikTok. It certainly makes a fitting tribute to Mrs. Knowles-Carter’s Grammy-winning single and music video.

Liang spoke to Instinct about how this moment came to be. “I went to an audition in 2019 for various live entertainment companies and when they saw me dancing they booked me for gigs almost immediately,” said Liang. “One of the companies belongs to the manager of the DHL Dancers, Jennifer Beck, and she asked me to join the team of girls and pose as a rugby player. She said I looked the part of a rugby player and would fool people easily, which eventually happened.”

What’s Next For Liang?

We certainly hope to see more from Liang, although he tells Instinct there has been, “No phone call from Ellen as of yet”. Although we can’t think of a single reason why the team wouldn’t want to make Liang a more permanent fixture. I would certainly get us to watch more rugby. Either way, we’re glad he was able to share his talent with the world. “I love to see that my passion gives others a reason to smile,” said Liang. Keep scrolling to get to know Laing, who lives in Cape Town with his boyfriend Abré, a bit better. Follow him to keep up with his work!
