During a recent appearance, actor Olly Alexander gave fans insight into the mechanics of a sex scene and how much effort it takes to make it look authentic. And spoiler alert — a lot of work — like putting together an entire room full of Ikea furniture level of work.

Olly Alexander On Filming a Sex Scene
While interviewing for the British Academy of Film and Television Arts, Alexander admitted to filming various sex scenes for more than two days which amounted to only 6 minutes of edited footage for the final version of the series.

We know what you’re thinking. Two days? That’s not too bad. Remember when your parents would be positioning you for a photo by moving your arms or telling you to tilt your head, pull up your pants, and pull down your shirt, look here or there. That lasted all of sixty seconds, maybe. Imagine being moved, adjusted, critiqued, and corrected for two days to get six minutes of usable footage. That is a literal labor of love.

Alexander joked when addressing how little of his footage made the final cut. He said, “When you watch the show, there’s not that much of me! I was expecting more! That wasn’t deemed good enough!”

Contrary to Alexander’s opinion, his performance was good enough because the 31-year-old actor was nominated for a BAFTA award for his role as Ritchie.
