Like many LGBTQ people who fear persecution or judgment, Bailey worried how coming out as a gay man would possibly affect career opportunities. Sadly, his apprehension intensified after being counseled to stay in the closet by a fellow actor.

While Bailey doesn’t disclose who he was speaking with, he did share their comments. He recalls, “there are two things we don’t want to know: if you’re an alcoholic or if you’re gay.”

While speaking with GQ, Bailey said this advice shook him, making him think the only way to be happy and successful was by being straight. “All it takes is for one of those people in that position of power to say that, and it ripples through. So, yeah, of course, I thought that.”

Bailey, who came out to friends and family in his early twenties, didn’t adhere to his co-worker’s misguided advice. Now 33-years-old, he comments about how his personal experiences play a crucial role in his work. “You put your life experiences into [the work]. What’s most interesting is not necessarily having to talk about what that is and keeping a sense of privacy.”

As for life as an out actor, he says, “I’d much prefer to hold my boyfriend’s hand in public or be able to put my own face picture on Tinder and not be so concerned about that, than getting a part.”

Bailey returns as your favorite Lord when season two of Bridgerton premieres on March 25, 2022. Watch the trailer here! If you haven’t caught up on season one, stream it now, exclusively on Netflix.
