Tennis star Garbiñe Muguruza is now engaged to the man who asked to take a selfie with her before her match in New York City.

Is this the real life? Is this just fantasy? Well, the fantasy is the reality for Garbiñe Muguruza and her new fiancé Arthur Borges. The Spanish-Venezuelan athlete was taking a walk through Central Park before the U.S. Open in 2021. There, she bumped into someone that would change her life forever.

Finding Love in Unexpected Places

Borges, a Tom Ford model at the time, recognized Muguruza and wished her luck on her upcoming tournament. Before they parted ways, he asked to take a photo with her to commemorate their meeting. “I was left thinking, ‘Wow, he’s so handsome,'” Muguruza told Spanish outlet Hola.

Luckily, the two crossed paths numerous times since their first meeting and would meet up to go on walks together. One thing led to another, and before she knew it, she was officially dating a fan she met on the street.

Now, the happy couple is taking a step forward with their relationship. Muguruza and Borges recently announced their engagement online.

“It felt weird. I was thinking something else and then when he proposed I started crying.” She continued, “I didn’t know how to react. I said yes in the midst of tears, it was very romantic.”

The tennis star, who won the 2016 French Open and the 2017 Wimbledon Championship before going on hiatus, shared an adorable tribute to their meet-cute on Instagram and wrote, “You had me at ‘Hello.'”

According to the outlet, Borges got down on one knee during a vacation in Spain. The country also holds great meaning for both of them beyond their engagement. While Borges was born in Spain before moving to Finland at a young age, Muguruza moved to Spain when she was six years old. So it is no surprise the two love birds are planning to tie the knot at a beach near Spain next year.

“He’s a mix, like me,” she said. “I’m half-Venezuelan and half-Spanish, so we understand each other. We share that feeling of being citizens of the world.”

The one important lesson I learned from their love story is to always shoot your shot. You might just end up married to them.
