Hawaii just became the 12th state to ban gay conversion therapy for minors.

On Friday, state lawmakers passed a ban on ex-gay (aka “gay conversion therapy”) treatments administered to minors.

LGBT rights advocates say the method, which is discredited by many healthcare professionals, does more harm than good to those who experience it.

“This has been a priority of the caucus for years,” said Michael Golojuch, chair of the LGBT Caucus of the Democratic Party of Hawaii. “(The measure) ensures that LGQTB youth will not be tortured by mental health professionals.”

Several states, including California, Oregon and New Jersey, have already passed similar legislation. Earlier this month, Maryland passed a law banning the practice, as well.

The bill was supported by religious organizations who view sexual orientation as a choice.
