In an op-ed in the Huffington Post, which originally appeared on, psychologist and author Bill Johnson II tackled the myths about size in the black community. Throughout the article, Johnson challenges the stereotype that all black men are large. In response to his endowment, Johnson says, “It’s not big and I want it to be! I guess it is about average size, and that’s just not good enough!”

Johnson recounts his experience growing up next to a neighbor who was hung. “He felt so highly about his member that he frequently had it on display. If he was not talking about it, he was challenging other kids to a … size contest. It was not enough that he was the tallest and seemed to garner the most female attention; he had to be hung as well.”

In addition to his own experiences, Johnson dives into the subject and discusses the origins of the myth as well as media representations. He goes on to describe his own insecurities with his size and the societal expectations many African American men battle. Apparently, Idris Elba doesn’t know what that’s like.
