Why Everyone’s Talking About a ‘Harry Potter & the Cursed Child’ Movie

Rumors have resurfaced again about Warner Bros. producing multiple Harry Potter and the Cursed Child movies with the original cast back in action.

Someone fetch the Veritaserum so we can settle these rumors ASAP. It’s been 12 years since Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part Two flew into theaters and had us all sobbing in our seats. Since then, Warner Bros. has released three spin-off films under the Fantastic Beasts title. The original plan was to release five movies, but it’s unclear whether or not that dream will become a reality.

Speaking of dreams becoming a reality, Potterheads for years have been championing a sequel film that focuses on the lives of Harry, Ron, and Hermione after the final battle at Hogwarts. This fantasy has always seemed far out of reach, but recent reports suggest it might not be so impossible after all.

According to a source from The Sun, Warner Bros. is working on bringing a film adaptation of the play Harry Potter and the Cursed Child to the big screens.

What is Harry Potter and the Cursed Child

Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is a play by Jack Thorne based on a story written by Thorn, J.K. Rowling and John Tiffany. The story jumps forward 19 years after the defeat of Voldemort and follows the Golden Trio’s kids as they start a new year at Hogwarts. Harry’s youngest son Albus Severus is starting his first year at the magical school and forms a friendship with Draco Malfoy’s son, Scorpius.

The Cursed Child opened in the West End in 2016 to great success and currently runs on six stages across the world. For this reason, it’s not surprising Warner Bros. would want to develop the show into a movie. Or two.

It’s also worth noting that Daniel Radcliffe, Emma Watson, and Rupert Grint are each approaching the age of their characters in the play. It seems unlikely that the production would get a green light if the original characters do not sign on to the films.

However, The Cursed Child is still in its early stages, according to The Sun. In other words, it’s still a dream. Additionally, Radcliffe has said in a previous interview with Variety that he is not ready to pick up the wand again anytime soon.

“This isn’t the answer that anybody’s going to want, but I think I was so able to go back and enjoy it because it’s not a part of my day-to-day life anymore,” Radcliffe said of the Harry Potter reunion special. “I’m getting to a point where I feel like I made it out of ‘Potter’ okay, and I’m really happy with where I am now, and to go back would be such a massive change to my life.”

Do Fans Even Want Another Movie?

There is also the matter of J.K. Rowling, who has been under serious heat the last few years for her harmful posts about the transgender community. It begs the question of whether or not the current audience wants another film. And with Grint, Watson, and Radcliffe all having spoken out against Rowling’s comments, will they sign on?

Unfortunately, we do not have a crystal ball to see into the future, so we all will have to wait and see.
