Omar Apollo makes his big-screen debut alongside Daniel Craig in Luca Guadagnino’s bold new queer romance, Queer.

From the genius behind Call Me By Your Name and We Are Who We Are, Luca Guadagnino is ready to mesmerize us again with his latest queer romance, Queer. This time, the Italian director dives deep into the life of Lee, played by Daniel Craig.

Teaming up with fellow Challengers screenwriter Justin Kuritzkes, Guadagnino’s Queer follows Lee as he navigates the vibrant and chaotic American expatriate scene in Mexico City. Lee hops from bar to bar, seeking passionate encounters but soon spirals into a tumultuous obsession with Allerton, portrayed by Drew Starkey, a young ex-Navy serviceman.

Apollo’s Big-Screen Debut

In an exciting twist, singer-songwriter Omar Apollo confirmed his role in the film, marking his cinematic debut. Reacting to a tweet on X (formerly Twitter), Apollo couldn’t contain his excitement: “First movie with Luca, wow hot a** cast,” the “Evergreen” singer wrote.

Star-Studded Cast and Crew

Joining Craig, Starkey, and Apollo are Jason Schwartzman, Henrique Zaga, Andres Duprat, Ariel Shulman, Drew Droege, and Colin Bates. The movie’s production also brings back some familiar faces behind the scenes: costume designer Jonathan Anderson, music maestros Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, and cinematographer Sayombhu Mukdeeprom, all from Challengers.

“Full-On Gay Love Scenes”

The film, adapted from William S. Burroughs’ 1985 novel, garnered early buzz at the Cannes Film Festival, with critics praising Craig’s performance. According to Venice Film Festival director Alberto Barbera, Craig’s portrayal is courageous. “Daniel put himself on the line in terms of portraying a gay man in a very direct and brave way, including a couple of sex scenes that are quite full-on,” he told Deadline.

Premiere Anticipation

With Queer set for its world premiere later this year, the anticipation is building. Many speculate the film might debut at the 2024 Venice Film Festival, scheduled from August 28 to September 7. Fans are eagerly waiting to see Guadagnino’s latest masterpiece unfold on the big screen.

Get ready to be swept off your feet by Queer, a story of love, obsession, and the chaotic beauty of life.
