Oscar-winning actress Emma Thompson is spilling the tea on which one of her iconic characters would most likely join a dating app.
While promoting her new rom-com, What’s Love Got to Do with It?, Emma Thompson sat down with Bauer Media to chat about her characters, new and old.

Early in the conversation, the interviewer jumped right into the important questions, like which one of Thompson’s characters is more likely to use dating apps to meet people.
“Obviously Trunchbull – she’d be on Grindr,” the actress said. We could not agree more! The queer community has viewed Miss Trunchbull as a lesbian butch icon since Matilda came out in 1996. Miss Honey is also a queer icon, but we won’t get into that right now.
As for what her bio would be, Thompson said something along the lines of, “I mean it. Don’t try anything.” That sounds like Trunchbull alright, but wouldn’t she want people to try things? Instructions are unclear.
Thompson also mentioned a few other characters she could see swiping for their next date, including Nanny McPhee, Harry Potter‘s Professor Trelawny, and Cruella‘s Baroness Von Hellman. The actress knows her way around the apps and summarizes what most of us think while swiping into the void.
“When I look at it, and when I go look at friends who do it, I think: ‘Is this not just a way of saying: are you willing to have casual sex with me or not?’”

Thirsting over Trunchbull
Thompson plays Agatha Trunchbull in the recent Netflix adaption of Roald Dahl’s Matilda. She is an Olympic shot putter, hammer, and javelin thrower and the cruel headmistress of Crunchem Hall Primary School. Though her character is the main antagonist of the story, that does not mean queer Twitter and TikTok are not thirsting over the icon.
