Billie Eilish openly acknowledged her attraction to women, prompting fans to question why the singer has to repeatedly declare her sexual orientation to the public.
From playfully employing a filter proclaiming “gay and tired” to openly discussing her celebrity crushes, Eilish has consistently expressed her attraction to women without feeling the need to confine herself to any specific labels. But if there was any doubt, the “bad guy” singer affirmed her stance in a recent interview with Variety.
“I’ve never really felt like I could relate to girls very well,” she said. “I love them so much. I love them as people. I’m attracted to them as people. I’m attracted to them for real.
“I’m physically attracted to them,” she added. “But I’m also so intimidated by them and their beauty and their presence.”
Eilish has faced scrutiny for her appearance and her sexuality since we first heard her sing “Ocean Eyes” in 2015.
“I’ve never felt like a woman, to be honest with you. I’ve never felt desirable. I’ve never felt feminine,” she told the outlet. “I have to convince myself that I’m, like, a pretty girl.”
The interview, which serves as part of Variety‘s ‘The Power of Women’ issue, continues with the “What Was I Made For?” singer speaking on her choice to wear baggy clothes at the beginning of her career and how it had nothing to do with being sexualized. Eilish kicked off her career at 16 and she’s only 21 now. It’s eye-opening to witness how demanding the industry can be, especially for young artists.
Billie Eilish Talks Celebrity Crushes and Being “Fruity”
As many fans were quick to point out, the Variety interview is not the first time Eilish has hinted about her sexuality.
In a Q&A with fans on her Instagram stories earlier this year, Eilish dropped several hints about her attraction to women.
