NFL Player Carl Nassib Raising Money For LBGTQ+ Youth

NFL player Carl Nassib is raising money for the Trevor Project!

Carl Nassib participated in the My Cause My Cleats campaign and designed a pair of cleats highlighting the group which helps LGBTQ+ youth. The defensive end for the Las Vegas Raiders is the only player in the league to come out while actively on a team. According to NBC News, after designing the cleats, players wear them, and they’re then auctioned off.

Nassib came out earlier this year in an Instagram post. At the time, the NFL matched his $100,000 donation to The Trevor Project.

While the shoes made their game-day debut on December 3rd, Nassib sat out as he recovered from an injury. However, The Raiders took to Twitter to highlight the cleats.

Nassib wasn’t the only player to highlight an LGBTQ+ organization. Cleveland Browns fullback Johnny Stanton choose to raise money for Athlete Ally, which aims to promote LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports. Stanton told Outsports he chose the organization in honor of his gay uncle. Stanton said his uncle never got to live his authentic truth in the sports world because he wasn’t comfortable being out. “I don’t want the athletes coming out today to feel like they can’t be themselves,” the NFL player said.

Since the program started in 2016, only one player had used the campaign to support an LGBTQ+ group before this year. In 2019, Miami Dolphins wide receiver Preston Williams designed cleats highlighting a local Florida group called Pridelines.
