It happens, guys. Your balls can get itchy, dry, flaky, and irritated. When this happens to your hands, you might reach for some lotion, cream or moisturizer, or perhaps you just tough it out. But what about when it happens to your family jewels? Should men moisturize their balls?

Yes and no. The old adage, “If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” applies here, so if your balls are hanging healthy without any skin discomfort, then no moisturizer is necessary. In fact, because the genital area is normally somewhat moist, adding moisture could result in jock itch or another type of fungal infection.

Should men moisturize their balls?

In some cases, however, application of a gentle moisturizer could be helpful. Conditions and situations that can result in dry, irritated, flaking, and/or itchy balls include.

  • Chafing from exercise or tight clothing
  • Allergies or hypersensitivity (such as sensitivity to detergent, soaps, or clothing)
  • Scrubbing or over-washing
  • Weather (e.g., cold, heat, humidity)
  • Irritation from urine
  • Shaving (manscaping)
  • Sexual activity

When choosing a moisturizer for your balls, look for gentle unscented, all-natural cleansing bars that contain a moisturizer or a light moisturizer alone. Look for products that emphasize excellent absorbability. Avoid heavy creams and ointments, because these may keep your skin too moist and thus promote fungal or bacterial infections.

When using moisturizer on your balls, be sure to steer clear of any open skin and the anus. Be sure to gently wash off any moisturizer before engaging in sexual activity so you don’t irritate your partner’s skin or orifices.

A word of caution is in order because the skin around your genitals is susceptible to irritation, so you want to know what you are treating before you reach for the lotion. If you have any doubts or questions about whether you are dealing with more than just dry, flaky skin, you should consult a dermatologist first since you may have a skin condition that requires medical attention.

Remember, gentlemen: men’s skin is just as at risk for skin irritation and problems as women’s skin, so don’t try to tough it out if you notice signs of irritation, dryness, or inflammation. For added ball protection, wear breathable cotton underwear and sleep in the nude whenever possible.
