A Southern Gothic thriller starring Jordan Doww, Robyn Lively, and David Koechner.
In the thrilling new Southern Gothic horror film Ganymede, a young wrestler’s forbidden crush unleashes a nightmarish demon, blending queer love and terror in a gripping tale.
The trailer for “Ganymede” starts with a harrowing scene of young Lee (Jordan Doww) enduring brutal conversion therapy by a local pastor (David Koechner). Lee is subjected to mantras and electro-shock therapy. Why? All because he liked a boy.
Lee falls for his openly gay classmate Kyle, much to his conservative parents’ dismay. But here’s the real twist: a sinister creature now stalks Lee, lurking in his closet, invading his mind, and twisting his thoughts.
Who is Ganymede?
In Greek mythology, Ganymedes, a Trojan prince and divine hero, becomes Zeus’s cupbearer after Zeus abducts him. Many believe the handsome prince was Zeus’s lover, with some texts even calling him the god of homosexual love. However, in this horror twist, Ganymedes appears as a literal demon.
“A Ganymede is an unrepentant homosexual with demonic forces that overtake others with sex urges.”
But maybe not everything is as it seems. Directed by Colby Holt and his partner Sam Probst, the film is described as “part horror, part coming of age.” It aims to capture the complex emotions of LGBTQIA+ youth as they grapple with their sexuality.
“While acceptance of the LGBTQ community may be at an all-time high, we also are facing a new wave of backlash, violence, and discrimination,” said Colby. “That ideological split and its real-world implications are what we seek to dissect with this work. We wanted to explore the queer experience in the modern South, in both its unapologetic pride and the terror one can sometimes feel with the realization they are gay or queer identified.”
Back to that packed cast we teased earlier. The film stars Doww, Koechner, Pablo Castelblanco as Lee’s crush Kyle, Joe Chrest, Marissa Reyes, Sofia Yepes, and Robyn Lively.
