5 Reasons to Watch ‘Shelter’ While Sheltering in Place

Here TV

You’re safer at home watching Shelter in place.

Ok, so, chances are, you’ve probably already seen the “gay surfer” movie, Shelter (at least once!). Hey, you may even own a copy. And it’s no surprise. It’s one of those feel-good, endlessly rewatchable movies we just love to love. Well, if you’re feeling down while sheltering in place, remember you’re safer at home watching Shelter on Here TV.

Need a little convincing? Here are five reasons to give this gay classic another go:

1. It’s one of the best reviewed gay movies … ever

Yeah, we’re not making things up when we say it’s a good movie. The audience agrees! According to the International Movie Database (IMDb), Shelter has a 7.8 out of 10 user score. That’s even better than other popular gay movies like Brokeback Mountain (7.7), Weekend (7.7) and A Single Man (7.6). Pair that up with Rotten Tomatoes 85 percent audience score, and you have a pretty well-loved movie on your hands.

2. The leads are gorgeous

This really isn’t that surprising for a “gay” movie (or any movie for that matter!). Audiences like to see beautiful people on screen. And Shelter certainly doesn’t disappoint. Trevor Wright plays Zach and Brad Rowe plays Shaun. They’re both super sexy, while still maintaining an approachability that makes them instantly likeable. As with any good movie, casting is key, and Shelter hit the nail on the head with these two.

3. There’s actual chemistry

Sure, movies can serve up an unimaginably beautiful cast — but so often (especially with gay-themed movies), there’s very little chemistry (or acting ability). This is where Shelter, again, stands out. Not only are the stars believable actors, they also make for a believable couple, bringing the budding romance of these two very different people alive for audiences. It makes for more engrossing drama … and steamier love scenes!

4. It’s a surfing movie … so lots of wetsuits!

Surfing is a central element of the movie. But don’t worry, you don’t have to be a sports fan to enjoy it. All you need is some simple math: surfing + wetsuit + water + hot guys = hot, wet, shirtless guys in skintight wetsuits. We love math!

5. It will leave you feeling warm and fuzzy

Yes, there are definitely a few scenes that will make you feel warm and fuzzy below the belt. But, even more than that, Shelter relies on quality story, not sex, to sell itself. You end up caring about the characters, their motivations, their future — all telltale signs of a successful movie. And when the love scenes do show up, it makes them that much better, now that you care about the characters.

How many more reasons do you need? Whether you’re watching it for the first time, or for the twentieth, give Shelter another watch this week.
