Just two Gen Z icons locking lips… no biggie (screams internally)
On Friday, Aug. 23, pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter dropped her highly anticipated album Short n’ Sweet, and to kick things off, she served up a killer music video for her latest single “Taste.” Co-starring none other than Wednesday star Jenna Ortega, this video is a wild, campy ride full of dark humor, horror references, and a touch of girl-on-girl action that fans can’t and won’t stop talking about.
Murder and Mayhem
In the Dave Meyers-directed video, Carpenter and Ortega play femme fatales locked in a deadly, yet oddly playful, rivalry. The video kicks off with Carpenter, dressed to kill (literally), checking her lipstick in the reflection of a knife. She then storms into a mansion, ready to take down Ortega, who she suspects is stealing her man. But in true horror fashion, things take a twisted turn.
Ortega, not one to be outdone, greets Carpenter with a shotgun blast that sends her flying over a balcony. From there, the video escalates into a series of increasingly over-the-top showdowns—think voodoo dolls, hospital brawls, and even a chainsaw massacre. But the twist?
An incredibly steamy kiss between Ortega and Carpenter.
A Funereal Finish
The video wraps up with the two rivals attending the poor guy’s funeral, decked out in chic black attire, only to leave the scene giggling and sipping on smoothies.
Campy References Galore
If you’re a fan of horror, this video is a goldmine. Carpenter and Ortega channel Goldie Hawn and Meryl Streep in Death Becomes Her with their vampy dresses and voluminous hair. Ortega’s nurse costume is a clear nod to Daryl Hannah in Kill Bill, while Carpenter’s grisly impalement scene gives a wink to the cult classic Ginger Snaps. And of course, what horror homage would be complete without a Psycho-inspired shower scene?
