On Friday, Disney Channel did something major for LGBTQ youth; one of its characters proudly declared “I’m gay.”

On the February 8 episode of the Disney Channel original show Andi Mack, Cyrus Goodman (Joshua Rush) became the first Disney character to say “I’m gay.” Although Rush is 16, his character is only 13 years old.

The episode focuses on Goodman’s fear about coming out to his friends. During a celebration of his late grandmother’s life, Goodman finally finds the strength to come out while describing a food dish at the ceremony.

“That’s gefilte fish — skip that,” he suggests before adding, “and I’m gay.”

After a pause, his friend Jonah Beck (Asher Angel) responds, “Yeah? Okay, cool.”

After the episode aired, Rush took to Twitter to talk about the moment. “Every day is a blessing working on this show,” he tweeted. “This milestone is just another stitch in a rich and vibrant tapestry that is Cyrus Goodman.”
