James Cameron, the renowned director of Titanic, has fervently denied rumors of his involvement in directing a movie about the recent Titan submersible tragedy.
In response to the speculations, Cameron took to Twitter, stating, “I’m NOT in talks about an OceanGate film, nor will I ever be.”
What Happened to the Titan Submersible
The Titan disaster, which claimed the lives of five individuals, gripped the world’s attention during an extensive search mission. The U.S. Coast Guard revealed that the sub suffered a “catastrophic implosion” halfway into its journey to the Titanic wreck site.
Given his history with the Oscar-winning 1997 Titanic film and his numerous visits to the Titanic wreck site, some might find the film rumors understandable.
James Cameron Responds to the Tragedy
However, Cameron’s concern over the ill-fated Titan is genuine. In a previous interview with ABC News, he expressed how the sub had raised alarms within the deep-submergence engineering community due to its experimental nature, prompting experts to write letters urging certification. The tragic event, occurring at the very site of the Titanic’s sinking, left him astonished and in disbelief.
“I’m struck by the similarity of the Titanic disaster itself, where the captain was repeatedly warned about ice ahead of his ship and yet he steamed at full speed into an ice field on a moonless night, and many people died as a result. And for a very similar tragedy where warnings went unheeded to take place at the same exact site — with all the diving that’s going on all around the world — I think is just astonishing. It’s really quite surreal.”
Cameron is also a submersible designer, and in 2012, he created and piloted the Deepsea Challenger.
OceanGate founder Guillermo Söhnlein responded to Cameron’s remarks, assuring the public that the Titan underwent a rigorous test program before its ill-fated voyage. He emphasized that despite Cameron’s expertise, he was not involved in the sub’s design, engineering, or construction, nor present during the testing phase.
As rumors swirl and speculation abounds, Cameron’s firm denial clears the air regarding his potential involvement in any film project related to this heart-wrenching disaster.
