Make sure to bring extra tissues before hitting play on episode five of That 90s Show. It’s an emotional one.

Netflix recently released their new series That 90s Show, which is a revival of the beloved Fox sitcom, That 70s Show. Set in 1995, Leia Forman (Callie Haverda) is visiting her grandparents for the summer where she bonds with a new generation of Point Place, WI, kids under the watchful eye of Kitty (Debra Jo Rupp) and the stern glare of Red (Kurtwood Smith). While there is a new generation of troublemakers, the show does have appearances from the OG cast like Laura Prepon, Ashton Kutcher, Mila Kunis, Topher Grace and Wilmer Valderrama.

However, it’s the newcomer Ozzie who is taking the internet by storm. Played by 14-year-old actor Reyn Doi, Ozzie is sweet, sassy, and always ready with a sarcastic remark. He also has a special bond with Leia’s grandma Kitty.

Ozzie Comes Out to Kitty

During the first few episodes, we see their bond grow as the group of kids spend more and more time in Kitty and Red’s basement (it is the nicest on the block after all). In episode five, their relationship is tested.

Ozzie is trying to act on step seven of his “16-step coming out plan.” Step six showed him hilariously coming out to strangers, including the worker at a bungee jumping site and the woman delivering his pizza.

“Step seven is coming out to an adult I see all the time. AKA your grandmother,” Ozzie reveals in the episode. While we adore Kitty, we understand Ozzie’s hesitancy to come out to her. Luckily, there was nothing to worry about.

The scene starts with Ozzie helping Kitty be “on the internet.” He cleverly emails her a letter that says he is gay, but that plan backfires when she accidentally restarts the computer.

“I’m gay,” Ozzie then blurts out. “I’ve known for a while now. I wanted you to know. I even have a boyfriend, Etienne, who lives in Canada.”

Kitty’s response could not be more perfect. “Well I don’t know how I feel about this,” she starts. “My friend Sharon married a Canadian man and he made off with her Toyota wagon.”

She then goes on to tell him she has no problem with him being gay and pulls him into a loving hug.

“You just made me feel really special,” she tells him. Queue the waterworks.

It’s wonderful to see such a nonchalant response from an adult figure to an LGBTQ+ youth coming out. We hope to see more of it in modern media.

We hope season two will bring more adorable moments between Ozzie and Kitty. Season one of That 90s Show is now on Netflix.
