Photographer West Phillips captures the unbelievably handsome side of Asian men.
Often in Western culture — especially gay Western culture — Asian men are often stripped of their sexuality to adhere to stereotypes for entertainment value. In pop culture, Asian men are frequently portrayed as peaceful, harmless, unisexual beings. This gelded concept of Asian men has become ingrained in our culture now. But, that’s changing slowly.
Photographer West Phillips spent several years exploring the world, searching for excitement and discovering unbelievably beautiful people to photography. Phillips built a name for himself working with various underwear brands and developed a reputation for his stunning physique and fitness photography.
“We are so used to seeing these absurd and offensive stereotypes about Asian men, whether it’s the comedic role with an exaggerated accent or the computer/science nerd. We have been fed this image and idea that somehow Asian men are lesser than their non-Asian counterparts and undesirable. Through my own eyes and art, I find that ridiculous and unacceptable and want to break that stereotype.”
In his first book, Asian Male Portraits, Phillips puts Asian men and their sexiness in focus. The book features photos from the beginning of his career as well as some of his new work.
Between the pages, you’ll encounter striking Asian men in a mixture of dramatic settings, summoning the reader to appreciate the handsomeness of an underrepresented and disparaged minority. With more than 100 Asian men from more than 10 countries, Asian Male Portraits is a collection everyone should experience.
